CLIMANET - a new European cooperation network involving Lemesos and six Greek cities participating in NetZero Cities

Limassol and six Greek cities participating in the NetZero Cities are one step closer to the implementation of their Climate City Contract, with the creation of the CLIMANET. Cooperation Network. The Municipality of Limassol joins forces with the Municipalities of Athens, Thessaloniki, Trikaion, Ioannina Kozani, Kalamata, with the aim of achieving climate neutrality for the cities of Greece and Cyprus.

The creation of the CLIMANET cooperation network is an important milestone, as it links the seven cities in a single institutional framework for continuous cooperation, exchange of know-how and joint implementation of projects to address common environmental challenges.

"With the creation of a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (EGTC), our cities have a powerful tool to effectively claim resources, develop strategies and accelerate the green transition... Through the network we can develop common methodologies and solutions for urban resilience, accelerate the maturation of projects and formulate standards that will allow their immediate and effective implementation at inter-regional and cross-border level", stressed the Mayor of Limassol, Mr. Yiannis Armeftis.

The signing of the CLIMANET cooperation network by the seven mayors took place on 27 February 2025, during the two-day conference "Climate Neutrality and Resilient Athens: Green and Blue Interventions in the City in the Era of Climate Crisis", held at the Technopolis of the Municipality of Athens. Projects and actions that strengthen climate neutrality while putting the citizen at the centre were presented on the sidelines of the signing of the CLIMANET network.

The Mayors of Limassol, Mr Yiannis Armeftis; Athens, Mr Haris Dukas; Thessaloniki, Mr Stelios Angeloudis; Trikai, Mr Nikos Sakkas; Ioannina, Mr Thomas Begas; Kozani, Mr Ioannis Kokkaliaris; and Kalamata, Mr Athanasios Vassilopoulos, signed the establishment of the network, which will be based in Athens.
